I'm Back From the Orgy
FactCheck.something
I'm sure everyone knows by now that that cantankerous old man, Dick Cheney muffed the website that he was trying to refer to at the debate. The link above sends you to a FactCheck.ORG (where Cheney wanted you to go) article about the debate. (Notice that even the website he meant to send you to says he muffled the facts.) But if you type in "FactCheck.COM" (go ahead - try it) you get redirected to Soros' website full of anti-Bush rantings. This is funny. Almost as funny as if you were redirected to porn.
I Don't Even Know Where to Start with This
Um, so my Oakland Raiders are off to a middling start this year. Not looking that great, but not as bad as last year. Someone shot at Siegfried & Roy's house (or Siegfried's house or Roy's or whatever.) What the hell is the connection between these two things you ask? Well, it looks like the shooter was former Oakland Raiders kicker Cole Ford. In 1997 he missed a bunch of clutch field goals and was cut. Now he is shooting up Seigfried and Roy's house. There has to be a joke here somewhere.

TODAY'S TOP FIVE: The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores.
I've Never Seen This Man Before in My Life! Well, Maybe Tons of Times On a night when John Edwards and the Red Sox won, how could anyone be unhappy? Well, there was one niggling complaint about the Edwards victory, a "zinger" fired by Cheney that even my liberal friends thought was a great line: Where Cheney talked about how he presides over the Senate, and had only met "Senator" Edwards for the first time last night at the debate. Great line! Except, like everything else that comes out of Cheney's mouth - including the words "hello" and "good morning" - it's a lie. As this story shows, the two have met on numerous occasions; there is even a photograph of the two of them standing side-by-side at a National Prayer Breakfast in 2001. Oh, man - in addition to having a defective heart and a soul wholly owned by Satan, you're telling me Cheney's memory is on the blink?
Shocker! Charles Duelfer, chief of the Iraq Survey Group, is going to present a 1,500-page report on the status of Saddam's weapons of mass destruction before the invasion. Here's what they'll report: "[Duelfer] is expected to conclude that Iraq had neither weapons of mass destruction, nor significant WMD production programmes at the time of the invasion." But, you know, what a dick that Saddam guy was.
The Daily Mayhem: Iraq Edition At least 10 people were killed when a car bomb exploded near an Iraqi military recruiting post west of Baghdad today.
CIA Belabors the Point, Cheney Still Doesn't Get It A few months ago, the aptly-named Dick Cheney asked the CIA to prepare a report on the nefarious connections between Saddam's regime and the terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Well, the results are in, and it turns out that what everybody has been saying for years is still true: Saddam's regime, detestable as it was, had nothing to do with terrorism, including al-Zarqawi. Don't imagine for a second this will stop the aptly-named Dick Cheney from continuing to posit a link between the two.
Is There a Draft In Here? Don't be suckered by the Republicans' quashing of Charlie Rangel's draft bill yesterday. Rangel's bill was never going to get approved, and in fact he introduced it to shame those Republicans in Congress who have draft-age kids that aren't in the military (of the people who voted to authorize force in Iraq, only one has a child in the military). A draft is still an imminent possibility, as this column from retired Col. David Hackworth suggests. Hackworth, keep in mind, is no wild-eyed lefty fanatic, but actually thinks a draft would be a good idea. He's not trying to stir up opposition to Bush, he's just pointing out the hard facts of trying to occupy a restive country and maintain our troop commitments elsewhere in the world.

Rest In Peace Rodney
Stop Sending The Bullshit Forwarded Emails Already "The House of Representatives on Tuesday crushed a bill to reinstitute the draft as Republicans accused Democrats of raising the specter of compulsory military service to turn voters against President Bush's reelection bid. After a bitter debate on Bush's handling of Iraq, the House killed the bill 402-2 as Republicans sought to stamp out rumors of an impending draft that have swept college campuses and the Internet, worrying young people and parents across the country."

TODAY'S TOP FIVE: Be Sure to Watch Edwards Slay the Troll Tonight.
Is This a Talentless Hack I See Before Me? Billy Bob Thornton, he of the sensitive performance in "Bad Santa," has lashed out at Shakespeare, calling the greatest body of work in the English language "bullshit" and "just a bunch of soap operas." I guess that takes care of that.
Paul Bremer: Sure, He Makes Sense Now That He's Not In A Position To Do Anything About It Paul Bremer, erstwhile proconsul of Iraq, has finally admitted what everybody on earth whose job doesn't depend on George Bush's fortunes on Nov. 2 already knows: the Iraq occupation was horribly bungled from the start. Bremer says the key failure was in not having enough troops in the country, a failure that continues today. These remarks, however, were intended for a private audience and were supposed to be "off the record" - oops! Paul Bremer, you've been caught in a moment of clarity and intelligence! You'll never work in this administration again.
Another Bush Administration Figure Falls Victim to the "Clarity and Intelligence" Virus Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, hours after saying there is no evidence linking Saddam's Iraq and Al Qaeda, is now furiously backpedaling, saying that he was "misunderstood" in his brief moment of clarity. This is the statement he says was "misunderstood": "To my knowledge, I have not seen any strong, hard evidence that links the two," referring to Iraq and Al Qaeda. Yup. Lots of room for misinterpretation there.
This Should Be A Great Moment for International Jurisprudence Cambodia is getting ready for trials of top Khmer Rouge members relating to the 1970s genocide that resulted in the deaths of 1.7 million Cambodians. The trials will be largely paid for and run by the UN, with foreign judges and prosecutors presiding. All of this sounds good, until you consider at least one former high-ranking Khmer Rouge thug who will most certainly not have to stand trial for his crimes: Hun Sen, who is currently Cambodia's ruler. Think that's going to get mentioned by any of the defendants?
The Daily Mayhem: Israel Edition About 70 people have been killed so far in "Operation: Days of Penitence," the largest Israeli strike against Gaza in years. Additionally, about 50,000 people have been cut off from the outside world by the incursion. Thousands are without water and electricity, and it's hard to imagine this is going to help get the peace process started again.

TODAY'S TOP FIVE: The Machine Rages On.
A Christian in the White House I have long maintained that George Bush's avowed religiosity is merely a pretence to fool the rubes, and this excellent article points out something I have long suspected but never seen discussed: George W. Bush, who called Jesus his favorite political philosopher and who believes he is God's appointed messenger on earth, does not attend church, nor does he belong to one.
The Persistence of Shaky Memory A mountain of evidence exists to prove that Al Qaeda and Iraq had no substantive contacts: congressional reports, CIA dossiers, the testimony of captured Iraqi officials. No serious observer has ever suggested that Saddam Hussein had any role in planning the attacks of September 11. And yet, day after day, event after event, Vice President Destro Cheney continues to make these absurd claims. One wonders: What will cause him to stop, short of a fifth heart attack?
Pat Robertson: The Greatest Friend the Jews Have Ever Had In a truly weird moment, Pat Robertson has warned that if Bush ever "touches" Jerusalem (presumably meaning that if Bush ever supports the notion of Jerusalem as a dual city governed by Israel and Palestine), evangelical Christians will form a third party based around Zionist revanchism. This is during an annual celebration of thousands of evangelicals in Israel, who march in support of the government. Note well: They march in support of Israel because they believe it is the obliteration of Israel that will usher in the Second Coming of Christ. You know, that's the kind of support Israelis can probably do without.
The Daily Mayhem: Iraq Edition Car bombs exploded in Baghdad and Mosul today, killing at least 26 and wounding more than 100. Meanwhile, more airstrikes were launched against Fallujah, and militants released a video tape depicting the beheading of an Italian and a Turk.
Next Time, Matt, Don't Help Matt Drudge is a loathsome man. If he fell into a ditch, the ditch would spit him out in disgust. But his latest foible is funny for showing how often he gets it wrong: Drudge posted video on his site that he claimed showed Kerry "cheating" at the debate by taking a pen out of his pocket. But if you look at the video, it actually shows BUSH taking a piece of paper out of his pocket and unfolding it! I would use the term "hoist by his own petard" here if I didn't think it would turn Drudge on.
